King Kamehameha

King Kamehameha is represented through an upright figure, an elevated arm, and distinctive regalia. The pose gives the sculpture a strong vertical movement and a silhouette that reads clearly from a distance. Clothing and ornament contribute to the subject’s identity as much as the anatomy and facial expression.

The work brings a Hawaiian historical subject into the tradition of monumental figurative sculpture. Its scale of gesture allows the figure to address the surrounding space, while closer details encourage viewers to consider the individual within the image of leadership.
